Borussia Dortmund fans rage over ‘crazy’ Jobe Bellingham announcement

Jobe Bellingham was given his first red card since moving to Borussia Dortmund on Sunday in controversial fashion.

Early into the second half, the former Sunderland midfielder was sent off for a professional foul on Philipp Treu during the 1-1 draw with Freiburg.

The incident has only gone on to emphasise how difficult Bellingham’s start has been in the Bundesliga, with the England Under-21s international struggling to adapt to his surroundings.

Bellingham has already been linked with a January exit from Dortmund and now, the red card will likely do little to win him favour in Germany.

Now, after earning his first start in the division since November, the midfielder is set for time on the sidelines.

Borussia Dortmund fans fume as Jobe Bellingham is set for two-match ban

While Bellingham is linked to clubs such as Crystal Palace, the former Sunderland star remains committed to trying to make his time at the German giants work.

However, the 20-year-old seemingly cannot find any luck, with Borussia Dortmund announcing via X on 15 December that his suspension is now set to last two matches following an assessment from the DFB sports court.

As a result, fans were fuming, with the German club now without a key player for almost a month.

One fan called the two game ban “crazy”, while another supporter believed it was “absurdly high” as he deemed the incident a “harmless foul”.

On top of this, supporters were quick to take aim at Gregor Kobel, whose poor pass to Bellingham led to the red.

What matches is Bellingham now set to miss?

If the ban is upheld, Bellingham is set to miss two crucial matches in Dortmund’s quest to qualify for the Champions League.

First off, the midfielder will be suspended for the home match against Borussia Monchengladbach on 19 December.

Following this, the winter break comes into play, meaning the next game Bellingham will miss will come on 9 January, when Dortmund travel to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Therefore, the 20-year-old’s next available match will be on 13 January, when Dortmund host Werder Bremen.
