Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has stated that he is not “surprised” by Premier League club Chelsea’s interest in Craig Gordon and admitted the transfer could take place.
Telegraph correspondent Matt Law previously claimed that the Scotland goalkeeper was on a three-man shortlist drawn up by the London-based club.
It is said, Antonio Conte’s side are considering their options as they are mulling over a decision on whether to sell backup keeper Asmir Begovic to Bournemouth.
Gordon played for Premier League outfit Sunderland for a five-year period before joining the Hoops.
The 34-year-old has established himself as a key figure in Rodgers side this season, playing 34 games in all competitions, including the win against St Johnstone on Wednesday night.
After that fixture, this was Rodgers response in regards to a possible transfer of Gordon to the Premier League club.
“I am not surprised,” said Rodgers, as quoted by Sky Sports. “His contract is up at the end of the season but there is an option for the club.
“But it is not something we would consider really. It is a difficult decision for a player, especially if you are getting financial rewards at the end of it.
“But after one year it is about playing. Craig has had that trauma of a couple of years out, not playing. And, from my experience, he loves playing football.
“He maybe thought his career was done but he is 34, as fit as he has ever been and playing at the best level he has done, according to him.”
Football Insider verdict:
Chelsea should look elsewhere for a goalkeeper rather than pursuing Celtic’s Craig Gordon. The Premier League leaders have an established shot stopper in Thibaut Courtois and more than likely whoever comes in will be back up to the Belgian international. Therefore, a number one keeper from another club would not like the idea of being an understudy and as a result, would demand more game time. Conte’s side are better off either nurturing one of the academy players for the future or purchasing a younger keeper from elsewhere. Not only that, Gordon is a key figure for the Scottish Champions and they would demand a high figure for their player.
In other Celtic transfer news, the club is in a three-way scrap for this Championship defender.
