Brendan Rodgers is desperate to keep Craig Gordon at Celtic and get him on a new deal, in the face of strong interest from Premier League leaders Chelsea.
Speaking after Celtic’s 4-0 win against Hearts, Rodgers told Sky Sports that he expects Scotland international Gordon to stay on Parkhead, and wants to enter contract talks with the veteran.
“I really want him here and to get him to a new deal,” Rodgers said. “Then we can keep continuing and move the whole club forward.
“He’s very much a part of what we’re trying to do here. There’s no way I can replace a player of that quality and how he has developed over the last six months has been fantastic.”
Gordon played in the Hoops 4-0 win over Hearts at Celtic Park, keeping his sixth clean sheet in seven games as Rodgers’ side went unbeaten for 27 league and cup matches.
Beating the Lisbon Lions’ record from 50 years ago of 26 matches without loss, Gordon has starred for the 47-time Scottish champions this year as they continue to dominate Scotland’s top flight.
With his current contract set to expire in May 2018, Rodgers wants to keep his 46-time international at Celtic Park.
Football Insider verdict:
Keeping Gordon at Celtic is vital for more than just the quality he offers on the pitch. Rodgers’ side possesses plenty of young stars including the likes of Moussa Dembele, Kieran Tierney and Kouassi Eboue all looking to the older players in the Celtic side for guidance and to pick up tips. After a spell in the Premier League with Sunderland, Gordon is able to offer plenty of advice from his long career and that quality is vital in Rodgers’ young squad as the former Liverpool boss looks to maximise the potential of his up-and-coming stars. Combining with that with his quality on the pitch, keeping Gordon and offering a him a new deal would be a top bit of business.
