Sources: Brighton in advanced talks to sign Nunez in £22m deal
Brighton are in advanced talks to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez for £22million, Football Insider has learned.
The Premier League club are closing in on reaching an agreement for the 22-year-old forward.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Brighton officials are over in Portugal today trying to thrash out a deal.
If completed, the deal for Nunez would surpass the £20m paid for Adam Webster in 2019 and become the Seagulls’ new record transfer.
Nunez was not named in the matchday squad as Benfica edged out PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last night.
He has been missing from action since May after undergoing knee surgery and being forced to miss Uruguay’s Copa America campaign this summer.

The four-cap international, whose Benfica deal runs until 2025, scored 14 goals and supplied 12 assists in 2020-21.
That was his first season in Portugal having signed from Spanish Segunda Division side Almeria the previous summer.
Brighton posted an annual loss of £67.2m for the last financial year as the fiscal effects of the pandemic took their toll.
But their balance sheet has been splashed with a healthy dose of green ink through the £50m sale of Ben White to Arsenal.
And Brighton’s headline arrival of the summer so far has been the £18m capture of Zambian midfielder Enock Mwepu.
Goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen and wide man Kaoru Mitoma have signed on permanent deals in recent weeks too.
The Seagulls also opened talks to sign wantaway Celtic hitman Odsonne Edouard earlier this month, as revealed by Football Insider.
