'Brilliant...Fantastic' - Exclusive: Whelan blown away by Leeds youngster v Derby

Noel Whelan was blown away by the performance of Ian Poveda on Sunday as Leeds United celebrated their promotion with victory against Derby County.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Whites forward claimed that he was excited by the prospect of the 20-year-old in the Premier League next season.

The winger, who was signed from Manchester City in January, made his full debut for the club 48 hours after their promotion was confirmed.

Poveda impressed at Pride Park as the Championship winners came from a goal down to win 3-1 against their rivals.

While Whelan admitted that Marcelo Bielsa must strengthen this summer he insisted that fans should feel confident in the current squad.

“I thought Poveda was brilliant,” he told Football Insider.

“He looks really exciting on the ball and has great movement.

“Still very young but from he was very lively yesterday. He has brilliant pace, fantastic control and a great range of passing. In the first half especially, he was brilliant. An exciting player and a prospect for the Premier League next year.

“We need additions, there is no doubt about that but we have enough players at the football club to go into the Premier League feeling confident.”

Poveda has now made three appearances for the Whites, all coming after the restart.

He put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year contract when he arrived earlier this year.
