Exclusive: Whelan reacts to Leeds opening talks on big-money new deal
Noel Whelan insists that the “most important deal” Leeds United can do this summer is to secure Marcelo Bielsa’s long-term future.
The former Whites and Coventry striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, hailed the 64-year-old for improvements at the club both on and off the field.
Bielsa, who has gained promotion in just his second season in charge at Elland Road, will be out of contract on 1 August having signed a two-year deal when he arrived in 2018.
Football Insider revealed that the club are keen to reward the Argentine for his work and will begin talks over a new £100,000-a-week deal after Wednesday.
If agreed it would represent a significant increase on his current salary of £60,000-a-week.
When asked by Football Insider if the manager’s contract was the top priority this summer, Whelan said:

“It is the most important deal that Leeds can do this summer.
“Not only has he brought great football onto the field but he has brought a professionalism to the club and to the players. They now have character and a winning mentality.
“They could have easily gone to Pride Park after the celebrations and just laid down. The changes did not matter. We still controlled the game and were the better side and that is what champions do. That is what Bielsa demands.”
Leeds owner, Andrea Radrizzani told Sky Sports: “He has changed the culture of our club so I am very glad of the decision and we are working very well together.”
“We will meet in the next days (for talks over a new contract).”
