Michael Brown has been left baffled by Helder Costa’s difficulty in delivering the goods at Leeds United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds midfielder explained why Costa has been a major frustration since his £15million loan-to-buy arrival from Wolves last summer.
The winger, 26, has made 36 appearances in all competitions for United but scored just four times and registered four assists.
Brown is miffed that Costa only shows flashes of magic given his talent and how long he has been in English football.
He highlighted the one-time Portugal international’s fluffed finish in the 1-1 midweek draw against Brentford in midweek.
“I’m struggling to see how and why he’s not gone on to the next step because he’s gone
on and had promotion before, done very, very well and the amount of opportunities Leeds United create, I would have hoped he would have chipped in a little bit more,” Brown told Football Insider.
“It typified his standing at the moment at Leeds with that left foot finish against Brentford [on Tuesday], that just sort of summed him up.
“I know it was just one opportunity but that probably was. Brilliant, into a key area and it was like a balloon being let down.”
At Leeds, Costa began the season on the bench but he’s now made 23 league starts, including in today’s 1-0 win against Bristol City at Elland Road.
A first-half goal from Luke Ayling helped secure a much-needed three points for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who remain second in the Championship table.
In other Leeds United news, Bruce questions whether Jean-Kevin Augustin is “really toxic” in Football Insider exclusive.
