Bruno Guimaraes reveals Pep Guardiola talk in Newcastle to Man City update
Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has revealed past a discussion with Pep Guardiola amid links with a move to Man City.
The Brazilian moved to St James’ Park in January 2022, when he signed from Lyon for a fee of £40million (Sky Sports).
He has since impressed in the top-flight of English football, with Newcastle setting a clear stance that he would not be sold in the summer amid interest from the likes of Man City.
Now, Guimaraes has opened up on those links with the Premier League champions, revealing how far they went, and his happiness at Newcastle.
Speaking about the interest from Man City in an interview with Globo Esporte in his native Brazil, the midfielder said: “I believe that at my club I am an idol and I have a lot of respect. I am the captain of Newcastle and it is something that if you had asked me three years ago, my biggest dream would have been to play in the Premier League. Playing, being an idol, being captain is something wonderful. I really like Newcastle.
“Of course, having Manchester City’s suggestions shows that I am at a high level, but it was nothing more than suggestions. I know that Guardiola likes my football, it is normal to have great coaches who admire your football. We have spoken once after the interview, I praised his work, he praised my work, but it was nothing more than that.”
Man City may need to up their interest in Bruno Guimaraes at Newcastle
Football Insider Opinion
While it seems they have not gone all out in their pursuit of Guimaraes just yet, the Premier League champions may soon have to change that stance.
The injury to Rodri – who is not going to be easy to replace – has arguably exposed something of a lack of depth in midfield at the Etihad.
That issue could continue into next season too, with German veteran Ilkay Gundogan out of contract in the summer.

Adding Guimaraes to that area would help to address that issue, bringing in another option in the centre of the park.
The Brazilian is of course a proven option in the Premier League, having excelled at this level with Newcastle since his arrival in the North East.
As a result, there would be plenty of confidence in his ability to do a job for Man City, if he made the move to The Etihad.
Indeed, interest in Guimaraes from elsewhere would be no surprise either, which could make this signing a coup. That is especially the case given that, at 27-years-old, the Brazilian has plenty of his career still ahead of him.
With that in mind, keeping a close eye on Guimaraes’ situation at Newcastle could still be a sensible plan for Man City in the coming months.
