Bruno Guimaraes sends message to Fabian Schar as Newcastle confirm update

Bruno Guimares has sent a message of support to Fabian Schar after Newcastle United confirmed that the defender has signed a new contract.

The 34-year-old, who has been with the club since signing from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018, has signed a new one-year extension to his deal.

Schar has not appeared for Newcastle since January after suffering a broken ankle against Leeds United, but is still seen as a valuable member of the squad by Eddie Howe.

The Magpies have already lost leading figures in Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon this summer, and the Englishman will be keen to avoid losing any more.

Newcastle transfer chiefs now face a busy summer, as they attempt to rebuild the squad that delivered such a disappointing season.

Bruno Guimares messages Fabian Schar

Football Insider exclusively revealed in March that Howe was keen to see Schar stay at Newcastle, and for good reason.

Despite his age and recurring injuries, the Swiss defender remains among his strongest options at the back.

Schar had started the Premier League season alongside Dan Burn in the centre of defence before he was injured, returning fully against Manchester City as the Magpies beat them in November.

Of the next nine Premier League matches that the 34-year-old was involved in, Newcastle won five of them.

After his injury, they would win just five of the next 17. The former Switzerland international supplies that backline with a confidence that simply is not there without him.

Newcastle cannot rely on him forever, but one more year will not hurt. Schar posted on Instagram following the news, with a post captioned: “There’s no place like home”.

Guimaraes reacted to the news and commented on the post with clapping hands emojis to share his delight.

Past and present Newcastle players react

Former Magpie Martin Dubravka also commented on the post, reacting to the news with the word “top”.

Matty Targett has left Newcastle on a free transfer this summer and will almost certainly join Middlesbrough, where he spent the season on loan.

He replied to Schar’s message with clapping hands and a heart emoji. The same was commented by Jacob Murphy.

John Ruddy was another to leave St James’ Park at the end of his contract this summer, and the goalkeeper wrote: “Well done mate, fully deserved”.
