‘Bruno Guimaraes should have extended ban’ as Newcastle clip re-analysed – Hackett

Keith Hackett believes that Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes should have been sent off against Leicester City on Saturday (14 December) and landed an extended suspension.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief, ex-FIFA, and Premier League referee believes that the 27-year-old was “lucky to escape a red” for his challenge on Wilfred Ndidi.

The Brazil international caught the Leicester midfielder on his leg with studs up, but the decision on the field was to award a yellow card and VAR didn’t intervene.

The Magpies went on to win the game 4-0 with Guimaraes scoring the second goal of the game, which came later on after this incident.

Newcastle should have been down to 10 men after Bruno Guimaraes’ challenge

Hackett told Football Insider, “When these players are making these challenges on the back of the heel/leg of the opponent, referees have to stamp down on this type of challenge and issue a red.

“For me, that’s a red card, it’s an over-the-top challenge.

“We seem to be, referees at this moment in time are allowing these and there’s a danger we will lose players because of it from serious injuries.

“For me, he is lucky to escape a red and an extended ban.”
