Bruno Guimaraes to Man City could happen – ‘watch out, this is the big one’
Man City could move to test Newcastle’s resolve with a bid to sign Bruno Guimaraes in the January transfer window.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, insisted that City are “on the lookout” for new midfielders, with the 27-year-old on their list.
City are financially capable of pulling off a “big” move following the sale of Julian Alvarez in the summer, while they are preparing to strengthen in the winter window.
Guimaraes has been a long-term target of Pep Guardiola’s, and Robinson has insisted the club could make their move in the coming weeks as they aim to strengthen their side.
However, he went on to explain that the Magpies are reluctant to see the likes of Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali leave the club.
Instead, they will look to cash in on some of the fringe players in their squad, with the likes of Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier linked to moves away from St James’ Park.
Man City plot move to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle
Football Insider revealed in September that City have a “huge” kitty to land a replacement for Rodri following the £81million sale of Alvarez to Atletico Madrid in the summer.
Now, Robinson has insisted some of that money could go towards a deal to sign Guimaraes, labelling the deal “one to watch” as the January window gets underway.
“Newcastle will find a way around the FFP and PSR by utilising the sales of other squad members,” he told Football Insider.
“They’re not going to want to sell the likes of Isak, Guimaraes and Tonali.
“I think the biggest one to watch will be if Man City come in and test their restraint for Bruno Guimaraes.
“We know he’s got a release clause in his contract and we know City are on the lookout for new midfielders.

“We also know that Man City, financially, are in a really good place because of the sale of Julian Alvarez and others that will allow Pep to enter the market.
“I think City might just test them with an offer for Bruno.”
