BT Sport pundit delivers verdict on Liverpool goalkeeper situation

By Harvey Byrne

BT Sport pundit David James believes that Liverpool’s goalkeeper situation is better than what it is made out to be.

The Reds brought German shot-stopper Loris Karius in during the summer, but after just 11 appearances he has been dropped from the side after a number of high profile errors.

Simon Mignolet came in for the summer signing, but the Belgium international has also drawn his critics over the years with errors himself.

The Merseyside giants have the joint worst goals against tally out of the top seven clubs, but former Liverpool goalkeeper thinks the club have two quality options between the sticks.

“I don’t think it’s as bad as people say,” told James to Press Association Sport, as quoted by the ITV website.

“If you look at the last four games since Mignolet came back, he’s kept three clean sheets and two of the three goals he’s conceded have been penalties.

“My concern prior to Mignolet coming back in was that both goalkeepers were making similar kinds of mistakes, and that makes you wonder if it is something they are picking up on the training field.

“But those mistakes seem to have stopped and Liverpool now have two top-drawer goalkeepers. That is a much better situation than having one great goalkeeper and one who doesn’t feel like he wants to be there. So many clubs don’t have that back-up, so Liverpool are in a privileged position in that respect.”

Despite their poor goals against record, Liverpool are currently occupying second place in the league table as they boast the most goals scored.

The Chelsea defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday has also kept them within touching distance of the top and without European distractions they will be eager to remain in the battle for their first title.

Their next two fixtures will see them take on Plymouth and Southampton in the domestic cup competitions before facing fierce rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.

They will be keen to return to winning ways against their fierce rivals after being held in a 2-2 draw against a struggling Sunderland side in their last encounter.

In other Liverpool news, the Reds have agreed a deal for this 23-year-old.
