Burnley may be about to sell Aston Villa target McNeil after major development – Phillips

Kevin Phillips has suggested Burnley may be about to sell Aston Villa target Dwight McNeil.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2001 European Golden Shoe winner delivered his verdict as Burnley hope to complete a club-record deal for Maxwel Cornet.

Sky Sports reported on 24 August Burnley have had a £15million bid accepted by Lyon for the versatile left-sided player.

It is now up to the player himself to decide where his future lies with the transfer window set to shut at the end of August.

Football Insider first revealed back on 29 April that Villa have set their sights on landing McNeil this summer.

This site then reported on 6 July they will turn their attention to the winger if their pursuit of Smith Rowe fails.

Smith Rowe subsequently signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal in July and was handed the number 10 shirt.

Asked whether Burnley sealing a deal for Cornet could open the door for Villa to sign McNeil, Phillips told Football Insider’s Dylan Childs: “Possibly.

“Only Dyche can answer that one definitively.

“He’s a player, if he was to become available, they’ll be quite a few clubs looking at him and Burnley could be about to sell.

“There’s always that option when a player comes in that another one might have to make way.

“He’s a good player, definitely.”

McNeil has started both of Burnley’s Premier League games this season.

The 21-year-old’s 98 top-flight games for the Clarets have yielded seven goals and 16 assists.

In other news, a “fantastic” Aston Villa player may be among two stars to quit after a Dean Smith update.
