‘Business-class’ – Collymore delivers shock verdict on Kane, Tottenham man must do this next

Former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore has said that Tottenham’s Harry Kane has not done enough to be considered a world class striker and that he must start being the game changer for club and country.

The 24-year-old has been in imperious form this season, netting 56 goals for Spurs and England, which included breaking the 22-year-old record for most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year, set by Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.

Since breaking into the first team, Kane has netted over 20 top flight goals in each of the last three seasons, and is just two away from making it four consecutive seasons during the current campaign, and has picked up two successive Premier League golden boot awards.

However, all of that is not enough to convince Collymore that he is world class, who believes that Kane has not proven himself as a game changer on either the European or world stage.

He also delivered the shock verdict that if he were a manager for a Champions League or international side, he would rather choose PSG’s Kylian Mbappe, who has 12 goals in comparison to Kane’s 24 across all competitions, than the England forward.

Writing for the Mirror, he said: “I’m afraid I still can’t put the Tottenham and England man in that bracket (world class) yet. I reserve that for Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Robert Lewandowski.

“In airline terms, he’s business-class – not quite in possession of that golden ticket to first.

“What I want to see from Kane now are the goals that make the difference in the biggest of matches. Should he do that and then go on to win the Golden Boot – or get close to it – at the World Cup, then I can start to reassess.

“If I was in charge of a team in the Champions League or World Cup finals, and I had a choice between Kane and Kylian Mbappe, I’d choose the Frenchman.”

Kane could be given the chance to make history on Tuesday, when Spurs visit Swansea City, as he looks to become the first player in the history of the Premier League to net a hat trick in three successive games, having scored a treble against both Burnley and Southampton.
