‘Callum Wilson fails contract audition as Newcastle update emerges’

Callum Wilson’s time at Newcastle appears to be up after failing to prove himself in the second half of the season.

Following an impressive five-year spell at St James’ Park, Wilson’s time at Newcastle seems to be coming to an end.

Wilson has been a reliable goal-scorer for Newcastle when available, but injuries and poor form have hampered his ability to perform in recent seasons.

The 33-year-old’s contract will expire in the summer, and according to a new update in The i, it seems unlikely the England international will be given an extension.

Callum Wilson fails contract test

As reported, the former Coventry striker is well-liked behind the scenes, but it is “difficult” to see him returning next season given that the club have handed new deals to most of those who are out of contract.

Wilson had been given until the end of the season to earn a new deal, but time appears to be “running out” during an injury-hit campaign that has seen him start just one Premier League match this season.

As such it has been reported that no talks over an extension have been opened, seemingly indicating the club’s decision.

Alexander Isak suffered a mid-season dip in form, failing to score in games against Bournemouth, Fulham, Arsenal, Man City, and West Ham during the new year.

But given Wilson’s inability to be relied upon, Eddie Howe chose to continue playing his Swedish striker even when he was struggling.

The ex-Bournemouth man has regularly appeared off the bench with his manager clearly giving him every chance to earn a new deal, but in 14 substitute appearances, the 33-year-old has failed to score or assist.

Newcastle likely to sign new striker this summer

The Magpies are still fighting for a place in the Champions League next season and will be hoping to keep Isak despite interest from Liverpool.

If they do manage to keep their talismanic forward, which looks likely given their astonishing asking price for the 25-year-old, Newcastle are still likely to search for a new striker this summer.

William Osula, much like Wilson, has failed to prove himself an understudy Howe can rely upon.

The Danish striker is yet to start a Premier League game for the Magpies since joining from Sheffield United.

As a consequence, Newcastle seem likely to ramp up their efforts for Liam Delap, as the Englishman has a very reasonable £30million release clause.
