‘Callum Wilson is finished’ – Newcastle fans explode at Ornstein’s update

Newcastle fans were all but unanimous in their reaction to a contract update regarding Callum Wilson’s future at St James’ Park.

Wilson’s season has been heavily disrupted by injury, with the striker missing 29 games across all competitions.

The 33-year-old has been at the club since 2020 scoring 49 goals across the five seasons since making his move from Bournemouth.

This campaign, he has largely played a supporting role behind Alexander Isak, whose stunning form has firmly established him as the club’s first-choice forward.

Wilson left St James Park in an emotional state in the final Premier League game and with his contract set to expire next month, many assumed his emotional farewell marked the end of his time in black and white.

However, a fresh update has cast doubt over that assumption, offering hope that his story at Newcastle might not be over just yet.

Newcastle consider new deal for Callum Wilson amid Leeds interest

David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed on X that Newcastle have opted not to offer Wilson a traditional contract extension, but talks have begun over a new “incentive-based” deal.

He added the 33-year-old striker is yet to decide his future, with interest in his services beginning to pick up.

Football Insider reported that Leeds United are considering a move for Wilson but have reservations due to his age and ongoing fitness concerns.

Leeds are expecting competition for Wilson, but the Whites are yet to make a decision whether or not to make a move for the veteran.

The Englishman has made just 22 appearances this season, with only two starts in the Premier League, and his role has become increasingly limited due to recurring injuries.

Newcastle fans voice frustration over potential new deal for Callum Wilson

Fitness concerns continue to plague his time at St James’ Park and supporters have grown frustrated by his long spells on the sidelines. Newcastle fans have previously called for Wilson’s contract to be terminated after repeated absences left the squad short in attack.

Even when available, Wilson has struggled to make an impact for Newcastle this season, scoring only once – a far cry from the clinical form he showed earlier in his career.

Since arriving at the club five years ago, he has missed an astonishing 114 games for club and country due to injury.

News of a potential new deal has sparked outrage among sections of the fanbase. One supporter commented: “If we keep Wilson here then whoever is responsible for that decision should lose his job” while another added: “This is ridiculous. It’s time to go. Callum has been a good servant but he’s finished.”
