Kevin Campbell was impressed with Leeds United youngster Niall Huggins on his debut against Arsenal.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker claimed the 20-year-old’s breakthrough into the first team is “great news” for the club.
Huggins replaced Ezgjan Alioski at left-back just before the hour mark and produced a solid display, despite Marcelo Bielsa’s side losing 4-2 at the Emirates.
The Wales Under-21 international has been one of the Under-23s standout performers this season, with his 11 appearances in Premier League 2 yielding one goal and one assist.
In December, the defender put pen-to-paper on a new two-and-a-half-year deal at Elland Road – it will run until the summer of 2023.
When asked for his assessment of Huggins’ debut for the Whites, Campbell told Football Insider: “Huggins did very well when he came on.
“I think Arsenal had taken their foot off the gas by this point. They were in contain mode but the young man did well though and it was great to see another young man come through.
“It is great news for Leeds to have another young man stepping up and taking his chance in the first team.”
Speaking on Huggins’ performance at the Emirates, Bielsa said: “It’s very difficult and unfair on a young player like Niall to come into the game in these circumstances where we’re losing 4-0 and to participate in trying to get us back into the game.
“He had a balanced game. He didn’t shine, but did not do anything bad either.”
