Campbell defends Bielsa after ‘explosive moment’ on Leeds training ground revealed

Kevin Campbell has defended Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa’s training methods amid an injury crisis at Elland Road.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said the “intensity” of Bielsa’s work is what got the Whites back into the Premier League.

Leeds United currently have nine first-team players sidelined through injury.

Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford and Liam Cooper are all out with hamstring injuries.

The Yorkshire Evening Post‘s Graham Smyth revealed (21 December) ‘an explosive moment’ in training has also ruled Pascal Struijk out until further notice.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Leeds need to review the intensity of their training, Campbell said:

“Intensity is what got Leeds into this position and you can only play like that if you train like that.

“Sometimes it is just bad luck. When your luck is in you can train with intensity and everybody is fine. But when your luck is out everyone starts to question your methods.

“I do not tend to look into the training methods too much. I think it’s really important to remember that it’s Bielsa’s methods which got Leeds to where they are today.”

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were due to travel to Liverpool on Boxing Day but the fixture has been postponed because of a Covid outbreak at Leeds.

The Yorkshire club are 16th in the Premier League table and five points above the relegation zone.
