Campbell 'gutted' for Saka after Arsenal news emerges via Athletic

Kevin Campbell is gutted for Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka after he missed England’s final warm-up game against Romania through injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker suggested the 19-year-old could have played his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans for the opening game against Croatia if he performed well against Romania.

However, as revealed by The Athletic, the teenager was ruled out of the 1-0 victory at the Riverside with a hip problem.

Saka starred in the Three Lions’ first warm up game, where he scored the winner in a 1-0 win over Austria.

The versatile left-footer has five caps to his name, having made his England debut in October.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the injury, Campbell said: “I was gutted for him because he was one of the best players against Austria.

“It was a great start from him and he would have been desperate to keep the momentum going. The young man has had a long, long season.

“Injuries are going to play a part. I think the teams that do well in this competition will be the teams that keep their players fit. I don’t think much will be done training wise because they have had long seasons.

“It is a real pity for Saka though, hopefully he is fit to play a part in the group stages.”
