Kevin Campbell has claimed it will be “tough” for Leeds United to sign Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker tipped the Whites to face “competition from quite a few clubs” for the 21-year-old’s signature.

Football Insider revealed on Monday Leeds are keeping tabs on the France Under-21 international as they plot a summer central midfield signing.

A product of Paris Saint-Germain’s academy, Soumare has made 29 appearances this season for a Lille side that sit top of Ligue 1.

He has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Stade Pierre Mauroy and his price tag is set to plummet going into the summer.

When asked for his thoughts on the potential pursuit of Soumare, Campbell told Football Insider: “Leeds need somebody who is a specialist in that holding midfield position.

“It is alright having somebody in there who can do a job but you also need a like-for-like for Kalvin Phillips.

“He has been a revelation in that position. He is an England international now so he will always be missed.

“It is a tough one for Leeds because a lot of teams need a player like that, so I would expect that they will face stiff competition from quite a few clubs for Soumare’s signature.”

Newcastle United had a £35million bid for Soumare accepted in January 2020 but the player snubbed a move to St. James’ Park.

Leicester City and Manchester United reportedly also hold an interest.
