Campbell salutes Conte after ‘unprecedented’ Tottenham transfer reveal from inside source

Kevin Campbell has claimed Tottenham boss Antonio Conte will make signing a “marquee centre-back” a priority in January.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the injury to Cristian Romero has left a “gap” in the Spurs rearguard.

As quoted by Sky Sports (1 December), Conte confirmed that Romero, 23, will be missing until 2022 after sustaining a “serious” hamstring injury on international duty.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on Monday (6 December) that Tottenham are laying the groundwork for an unprecedented January transfer spree.

A Tottenham source told this site that Conte is pushing the club to bring in multiple new signings in January, including a “proven” centre-half.

Campbell insisted the effect of Spurs’ “attacking flair” will be nullified if they fail to address their “leaky” defence.

“They’ve got a lot of weapons going forward, so that backline has to be a real priority for Conte and Spurs,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“With Romero injured there’s a gap at the back. Conte is a very experienced manager, and he knows that for all the attacking flair they have, if they are leaking goals – it will not end well for Tottenham.

“It’s a smart move to be targeting that marquee centre-back in January.”

Conte has utilised his famous 3-5-2 system since arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month.
