Campbell salutes Johnstone after ‘massive’ update on West Brom future
Kevin Campbell has claimed “it would be massive” for West Brom if Sam Johnstone put pen to paper on a new long-term contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Albion and Arsenal striker said Valerien Ismael would have “the strongest team in the league” if the 28-year-old stayed at The Hawthorns.
Johnstone‘s future has been the subject of great speculation this summer, with West Ham seeing a £10million bid for him rejected last month.
As revealed by Football Insider (August 13th), the England international is set to stay at The Hawthorns this season despite having less than 12 months left on his current contract.
As quoted by the Express & Star, Ismael revealed the club have been in talks with the goalkeeper’s representatives over a new deal.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Johnstone potentially agreeing to new terms, Campbell said:
“Look, that would be great news.
“West Brom would be in a much better position if they kept Sam Johnstone. He is someone who has been there, seen it and done it when it comes to the Championship.
“He is an England international goalkeeper so of course he makes the team a lot stronger.

“If he signed a long-term contract it would be massive. That way if anyone wanted him they would have to pay a big fee. It secures the club which is a good move all round in my eyes.
“Listen, if Johnstone stays they have the strongest team in the league, without a doubt.”
