Campbell tips Leeds to return for O’Brien in January after fresh Orta quotes

Kevin Campbell predicts Leeds United will return for Lewis O’Brien in January after failing to sign him this summer.

The Arsenal icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to recent quotes from Victor Orta.

On 31 August, Orta told the Yorkshire Evening Post that Leeds and Huddersfield could not agree on the “valuation” of O’Brien.

Leeds

Football Insider first revealed on 30th July that Leeds had opened O’Brien talks and then updated on 13 August that the midfielder wanted to move to Elland Road.

He has just 12 months left to run on his Town contract but the club have the option to extend it by a further year.

Late in the window, Leeds secured the signing of Dan James for a reported £25million.

Campbell insists this proves the money was there to do a deal with Huddersfield but he claims Leeds didn’t want to over pay for a squad player.

“The money is there,” Campbell told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs.

“Sometimes these transfers are to fatten your squad up. The player might not go into the starting 11 straight away.

“£8million to fatten the squad when Leeds actually have players who can do a job, maybe it wasn’t the priority.

“Maybe they will bide their time and return for him in January.”

O’Brien has scored five goals and provided seven assists in 85 games across all competitions for Huddersfield.

The 22-year-old has played four games this season after missing the beginning of the campaign with illness.
