'Dire', 'Embarrassing' - John Hartson slams Rangers senior players in scathing assessment
Celtic legend John Hartson has claimed Rangers “can’t get any worse” after Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing which secured a seventh successive title for the Hoops.
The Gers were miles off the pace for the second time against their bitter rivals in a matter of weeks and were torn apart by a rampant Celtic side.
Hartson blasted the Gers for their ’embarrassing” performance against Brendan Rodgers’ side and claimed they will need to spend big in the summer to catch up with Celtic.
With manager Graeme Murty set to leave in the summer, Hartson does however think that if Steven Gerrard takes the reins then the Gers “can only go one way.”
“Rangers are dire. They were embarrassing in the semi-final, their most senior players were embarrassing. Sunday, they were embarrassing,” Hartson said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“It’s a mismatch at the minute. Rangers are in turmoil, on and off the pitch. They need serious investment.

“Steven Gerrard will look at that and he’ll say, if he takes Rangers, ‘I can only go one way, and that’s up’.
“They can’t get any worse. And that’s why if he took the job I don’t think it would do him any harm.
“He is going to a great club with huge backing, fans-wise.”
The Light Blues are three points behind second-placed Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership with only three games remaining and could even find themselves ending the campaign in fourth and missing out on a Europa League spot.
Murty’s side face Kilmarnock on Saturday before back-to-back away games against Aberdeen and then Hibernian to complete the season.
If the Gers do slip to fourth, the could still scrape into Europe – but only if Celtic lift the Scottish Cup next month.
Football Insider verdict
Rangers were rotten against Celtic but their demise has been a touch over-exaggerated. As it stands the Gers can still finish second in the league by winning their next three games. It might not be ideal but things could have been much worse this season. At the start of the campaign, most Rangers fans would’ve probably predicted their side would be around 10-15 points behind Celtic so things aren’t quite as disastrous – although it could be much better. 12 months ago Celtic were some 30+ points ahead in the league so things are, slowly, improving,
