Darren Bent claims that Marcelo Bielsa “can’t really trust” Tyler Roberts after his indifferent displays for Leeds United.
The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that the 21-year-old has failed to prove himself in the club’s opening games of the season.
Roberts, who featured as a substitute against Liverpool and started versus Hull City, came off the bench at half-time to replace Rodrigo Moreno in Leeds’ 4-3 win over Fulham.
The versatile forward was one of a handful of first-team players who played against the Tigers in the League Cup as the Whites were knocked out on penalties.
Bent admits that Roberts needs to impress in his cup and substitute appearances if he is to feature regularly and admits he has failed to live up to expectations so far.
Bent told Football Insider: “These are the kind of games you’ve got to make your mark in. Even if you play really well but you don’t play the next game, at least the manager goes: ‘He played well.’
“It’s fresh in the manager’s mind that: ‘I’ve not started him today but he’s confident and he’s played well,’ but if you get picked and don’t play very well, the manager’s going look at you and go: ‘Well I can’t really trust him because I’ve picked you, you didn’t do well, so how can I play you regularly in the Premier League?’
“You earn the right to play in the Premier League by putting in performances as a substitute or against teams like Hull in the League Cup.”
Roberts played 23 times in the Championship last season, with four goals and a single assist to his name.
He has a total of 56 appearances under his belt for the Whites since he joined the club from West Brom in January 2018.
