Carragher urges Liverpool to axe first teamer
By Dominic Toner
Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool midfielder Emre Can should be taken out of the starting line-up.
The 23-year-old played 67 minutes on Saturday in the defeat to Hull and came under heavy criticism from the club’s supporters on Twitter for his performance.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten 2-0 by Hull in the Premier League and saw their title hopes fade further away.
Carragher claims that midfielder Can should be dropped from the side following the defeat, with team-mate Georginio Wijnaldum the ideal replacement.
“I would take Emre Can out of the midfield,” Carrahger said, as quoted by Sky Sports. “I don’t think it works as a two alongside Jordan Henderson.
“I don’t understand why Georginio Wijnaldum was out of the side. I think he brings more energy and a bigger goal threat.”
Liverpool have operated with a three-man midfield for the majority of the season and they have allowed been a good platform for the attacker to go forward.
However, the Reds frontline has been misfiring in recent weeks and scoring goals has become a problem for the team.
Defensive midfielder Can could see his starting place come under threat as he plays a similar role to captain Jordan Henderson in the team.
The Merseyside club were at their fluent best when they operate with the combination of Henderson, Wijnaldum and Adam Lallana during the early stages of the season.
