As always seems to be the case when there is a managerial vacancy, Brendan Rodgers has been linked with the manager’s job at Southampton, who sacked Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday night.
The Scottish Sun claim that the struggling Premier League side are interested in the Celtic boss, and that football vice-chairman Les Reed is a ‘huge admirer’ of the Northern Irishman.
It may well be the case that Reed is a big fan of Rodgers, but the Hoops manager would be making a colossal error if he even entertains for a second moving to St Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton are currently in 17th place in the Premier League, only one point and one place ahead of the relegation zone – aside from more money, why would Rodgers want to swap a potential Champions League campaign with the Bhoys for a potential season in the Championship?
It’s also worth remembering that Southampton sacked Claude Puel last season despite finishing eighth in the Premier League, which says it all about the inflated expectations midtable clubs in the Premier League have.
There’s little doubt that Rodgers will eventually want to have another try at the Premier League after his last attempt with Liverpool ended badly, but Southampton seem like a club on the way down, and there’s little chance of him moving there.
In other Celtic news, the Hoops are considering making Odsonne Edouard’s loan move a permanent one
