Celtic confirm immediate exit of 6ft 1 powerhouse as paperwork finalised

Celtic has confirmed that 26-year-old centre-back Erik Sviatchenko has returned to his former club FC Midtjylland on a permanent deal.

The news was announced on the official Celtic Twitter page in reply to a tweet from FC Midtjylland on Sunday evening, who confirmed the enforcer had signed until 2022.

Sviatchenko joined from FC Midtjylland in January 2016 for £2.25million before returning on loan a year later.

He made 63 appearances in total for Celtic and stands 6ft 1 tall, according to Transfermarkt.

Football Insider verdict:

This was expected after Sviatchenko fell out with Brendan Rodgers, which led to his loan move. According to the Daily Record, the fee is £1million, which means that Celtic have had to take a significant hit on the player, but it is extra money for Rodgers to spend for a player who wasn’t going to play for the first team again. Sviatchenko was angling for a move to a bigger club earlier in the summer but instead he returns to the club he first joined back in 2008. Meanwhile, Rodgers sets about revamping his current squad in the face of a renewed challenge form Rangers under new manager Steven Gerrard. However, his top target seems to be the permanent capture of Odsonne Eduoard at the moment. There’s reportedly a deadline of June 16 in place to complete that deal, which gives Rodgers plenty of time to strengthen ahead of the crucial Champions League qualifiers. They play their first of four qualifiers on July 10/11.
