Celtic could be signing ‘absolute star’ after ‘huge’ Kvistgaarden news – pundit

Celtic would be taking a hefty gamble which the club would need to pay off if they sign Mathias Kvistgaarden, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Scotland full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says the asking price of Danish club Brondby for the young striker of £8.5m [Daily Record, 22 June] is a “huge fee” in the Scottish Premiership and Kvistgaarden would need to be an “absolute star” at Celtic Park.

Celtic are yet to make a signing this summer but have revived their interest in Kvistgaarden which last surafced in January – Football Insider revealed in the previous window that Brondby felt the proposed £4m fee from the Bhoys was considerably below their valuation.

The 5’8” forward, 22, has so far scored 23 goals in 83 senior appearances for Brondby, who will compete in the Europa League next season and want to hold onto one of their key performers.

Kvistgaarden is yet to receive a full Denmark call-up, but has scored four times in 13 caps for the Danish Under-21s.

Celtic would need huge impact from Kvistgaarden, says Hutton

Hutton is adamant that if Celtic are to part with such a fee for Kvistgaarden and meet Brondby’s price tag, the young Dane would be expected to deliver for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

“You’re always looking for different options – we know what Kyogo brings and what they had with players like Adam Idah,” he explained.

“They’ve tried different avenues and different profiles – and I think that’s what you need, and it’s what clubs are always searching for, something different.

“To bring in someone like [Kvistgaarden] is ideal for them, but paying that sort of money, you’re hoping he’s going to be an absolute star.

“Let’s not kid ourselves, up in Scotland that’s a huge fee, so they’d be putting a lot of faith in him.

“But every squad needs these ‘different’ types of players and I believe he fits that bill.”
