Celtic could seal Wyke signing after contract talks confirmed – Robinson

Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke would be a “great” signing for Celtic this summer, according to Paul Robinson.

However, the former Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old is not the man to replace the potentially exit-bound Odsonne Edouard.

North-east giants Sunderland revealed on their website that they are in talks with Wyke regarding his future ahead of his contract expiring next month.

The centre-forward enjoyed a sensational campaign, with 30 goals in his 53 appearances across all competitions, but it was not enough to secure the club promotion.

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips fears promotion was key to the League One club’s hopes of retaining Wyke’s services.

The Black Cats’ failure to secure promotion could therefore open the door for Celtic to sign Wyke, with ex-Bhoys Mark Wilson telling the Celtic Huddle Podcast last month that the Hoops are keen on signing him.

When asked by Football Insider if the Sunderland striker would be a welcome addition at Parkhead, Robinson said: “Charlie Wyke would definitely be a risk-free signing.

“I think he would be great addition to the squad but he is certainly not the man to replace Edouard. He is not on that level.

“Celtic need to have a big summer this season and replacing Edouard will be one of the biggest challenges.

“With Scott Brown leaving, Edouard potentially following and a new manager coming in, that is a lot of change.

“They are in a similar situation to Tottenham. A couple of big players leaving, a new manager coming in after a season where they have fallen so far behind in the league.

“The rebuild needs to be done quickly because the fans will not be willing to wait for success. Last season will have hurt Celtic fans and things need to improve quickly.
