Celtic expected 4-2-3-1 v Inverness: Senior man axed

By Will Butcher

Celtic are expected to revert to their normal 4-2-3-1 system after being emphatically beaten 7-0 by Spanish Champions Barcelona.

Manager Brendan Rodgers opted to use a five-man defence against Luis Enrique’s side, as he attempted to nullify the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

That formation is expected to be abandoned in Sunday’s domestic encounter against Inverness, after the attacking trio found holes in the Hoops’ leaky defence.

Sweden international Mikael Lustig is set to miss out on making Rodgers’ starting eleven on Sunday, as he is set to be replaced by Australian attacking midfielder Tom Rogic.

Costa Rica international Cristian Gamboa is likely to start on the right of Rodgers’ defence as Lustig drops out, despite being terrorised by Brazilian superstar Neymar on Tuesday night.

Elsewhere, James Forrest is in line to get the nod over Patrick Roberts on the right flank, after the Manchester City loanee was largely ineffective against Barcelona.

Star striker Leigh Griffiths is set to miss out again as he continues to recover from a hamstring problem, with manager Rodgers not looking to risk the Scotland international at any costs.

French wonderkid Moussa Dembele will look to add to the hat-trick he scored during the Hoops’ emphatic 5-1 Old Firm derby win against Rangers last Saturday, despite missing a penalty during Tuesday night’s whitewash.

Celtic will be hoping to continue their 100% record in the Scottish Premiership this season, and extend their lead at the top of the table to five points.
