Celtic expert drops ‘massive’ Daizen Maeda claim as Premier League club ready bid
Frank McAvennie has insisted a move from Celtic to Southampton would be a massive downgrade for Daizen Maeda.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker claimed the Saints will be relegated this season.
On 10 January, Sky Sports reported that the Saints are monitoring the 25-year-old after his impressive performances for Japan at the World Cup.
According to the Glasgow Times (8 March), Southampton have now sent scouts to watch the forward ahead of a possible bid in the summer.
But as quoted in the same report, Maeda said he is not thinking about the future and insisted Celtic are his only priority at the moment.
Southampton are currently languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table and have struggled for results in recent games.
When asked if a move to St Mary’s would be a massive downgrade for Maeda, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Of course it would.
“I do not think Southampton will be there, I think they will get relegated.

“It is good when people come in for players, it means they are doing the right thing. Maeda, I do not know what he is eating he is going like a Duracell, he just keeps going.
“The manager is always taking people off and I would not like it. But the players all know that they get an hour and then they’re taken off, save their legs for the next game.“
