Celtic are eyeing up a last-ditch swoop for Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun claims that the Hoops are joined by Leeds United in trying to sign Martinez ahead of the 11pm transfer deadline on Wednesday night, but there is one major caveat that lies in wait.
Spanish newspaper AS claimed in their print edition on Tuesday that that the 25-year-old is edging towards a move to Elland Road, and it now appears Celtic are trying to hijack the English club’s move.
Martinez is currently on loan from Premier League giants Arsenal at La Liga side Getafe, and while he is said to be eager to the idea of returning to the UK, he may not be allowed by his current employers.
The Argentine shot-stopper is on loan until the end of the season in Spain and with Crystal Palace in talks about Getafe’s other goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, Martinez may not be allowed to leave.
The former Wolves and Rotherham ‘keeper has played just four times in all competitions while on loan in La Liga this term and Celtic no doubt see him as a short-term replacement for Craig Gordon, who is out for three months with injury.
Football Insider verdict
Martinez is not a bad goalkeeper and will be a really good addition for Celtic – however it seems there is little chance of getting this deal done. Palace have been linked with a swoop for Guaita for quite a while and with Roy Hodgson desperate to improve his squad, they may get that deal over the line shortly. The Hoops have mad a bid for Motherwell’s Trevor Carson so it is good to see Brendan Rodgers is keeping his options open. It may be best for them to focus more on Carson though as the 29-year-old seems a much more realistic target.
In other Celtic news, the Bhoys have tabled a six-figure bid for this proven top-flight performer.
