Celtic are in the hunt to sign Republic of Ireland youth international Elvis Azah, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that Azah, 16, impressed during a trial match for the Hoops last week when he scored and supplied an assist in a 4-1 win against Partick.
It is understood that the Scottish champions are not the only team chasing the Irish winger’s signature though as Chelsea, Southampton and Brighton are also keeping close tabs on the teenager.
The report adds that Azah as also had spells on trial at both Manchester United and Everton, but a move to one of those Premier League clubs was blocked due to the Ghanaian-born attacker not possessing an Irish passport.
He moved to the Republic of Ireland aged 11 and has only recently become eligible for citizenship, so he would now be free to sign for a British club without a work permit.
The Daily Mail reports that Azah’s rapid pace, acceleration and dribbling abilities are what caught the eye of Celtic.
Football Insider verdict
Celtic have quite a chase on their hands if they want to snap up this electric youngster ahead of teams like Southampton. Azah looks to have all the raw talent that is acquired for a young up-and-coming winger. He has pace, he can beat a man and he can perform when getting into advanced positions down the flank. The Hoops have a good history of nurturing young talent into the first-team after developing in their academy. Azah should see that and decide a move to Parkhead is a better option for him than Chelsea. Southampton are the biggest threat though. They have brought through a lot of young English players in the last decade and Azah may see that as the best option.
In other Celtic news, Rangers have been tipped by the bookies to sign this former Hoops forward who is now a free agent.
