Celtic legend Kris Commons has blasted Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos for again missing gilt-edged chances in an Old Firm derby – and insists the Light Blues simply “can’t excuse it” if they have ambitions of competing with the Hoops.

The Colombian missed two really good chances when the Gers were already losing in Sunday’s 4-0 Old Firm defeat at Hampden Park in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup.

The Bhoys icon believes that if Rangers are to finish a “dominant second” in the Scottish Premiership then Morelos needs to be putting those sort of chances away and add to his 18 goals this season.

“The chances he is missing are glorious. They are glorious,” Commons said during Sky Sports’ live post-match coverage of the Hampden showdown (15/04, 14:15).

“If you’ve got a centre-forward and you are wanting to finish a dominant second or challenge Celtic he needs to put those chances away.

“You can’t excuse it.”

Morelos is the Gers’ top goalscorer this season with 18 although the striker has missed a number of high profile chances to add to his tally.

The result equals a 107-year-old club record with the Gers now going to go into their eighth consecutive season without a major trophy.

Football Insider verdict:

Commons is spot on with his assessment although it is also fair to point out Morelos has scored more goals in the league than any Celtic player. At 21, Morelos still ha a long way to go until he is te finished article but needs to start showing a more clinical side if he is to live up to his potential as a penalty box striker. Morelos has one more chance to end his Old Firm duck when the two sides meet at the end of the month in the Scottish Premiership but Morelos will need to be much more lethal to finally score his first goal against Celtic.
