Celtic legend Tom Boyd has claimed Joey Barton is jealous of Scott Brown because Celtic didn’t try and sign him.
Football Insider reported earlier this week that Barton had claimed that Hoops skipper Brown is nowhere near his level of ability.
“Joey has certainly been saying a lot before the campaign has started and doing a lot of talking,” Boyd told the Herald.
“It’s just a bit of banter before the season starts. It’s perhaps filled with a hint of jealousy that Brendan never came in for him.
“We do know he is a big Hoops fan, he’s said that in the past. He’s probably just jealous that he’s not playing alongside Scott rather than against him.”
The veteran midfielder, who has joined Rangers on a free transfer after signing a two-year deal, is used to being in the headlines after a controversial career that includes time in prison.
With Rangers back in the Scottish Premiership after four years of climbing the leagues after liquidation in 2012, the two Glasgow clubs are all set to reignite their historic rivalry on a regular basis.
Barton, 33, has joined Rangers on a free transfer from Burnley, who he recently helped return to the Premier League.
The feisty midfielder played 33 times in the league this season to end speculation he was past playing at the top level, and Boyd is looking to see if Barton can back up his talk on the pitch for Rangers next season.
“Joey’s a very good footballer, but we’ll wait and see if he can talk the talk,” the former full-back told the Herald. “He’s got a decent pedigree and is someone who can have an influence on the pitch, but there’s still a long way to go in the campaign and we’ll to see if he can follow it up.”
In other Celtic news, they have gone head-to-head with Rangers to sign a winger from England.
