Kieran Maguire shares ‘massive’ verdict on McGregor’s Celtic takeover claim amid £660m whisky reveal
Conor McGregor’s business sense and “massive” public profile would make him an excellent benefactor for Celtic.
That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after McGregor revealed had considered buying shares in the Glasgow club.
McGregor earned approximately £128million in 2020 according to data released by Forbes on Wednesday, making him the world’s highest-paid athlete.
Two days earlier, the UFC legend tweeted that he had discussed the possibility of acquiring equity in Celtic from current owner Dermot Desmond.
Maguire claimed that the global superstar’s brand could help introduce Celtic to new markets.
“He has been very successful in terms of some of his other business ventures,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“His whisky is doing very well. I think they have just sold out and they are at something like number four in the whisky charts.
“They sold it for something like £660m. Now, what percentage of that relates to him, I don’t know.
“But he is very good at extending the Conor McGregor brand. It would be good publicity for him to be connected with Celtic.
“How much time he would be able to devote to Celtic on a day-to-day basis is up for debate.
“But Celtic could piggyback on him more than he could piggyback on them, especially in terms of exposure to other markets. He does have a massive following, after all.”
In an interview with Celtic’s official media team in March, Desmond labelled suggestions he might sell his shares as “contemptible.”
McGregor has also expressed interest in purchasing equity in Man United.
In other news, Edouard tipped to leave Celtic “sharpish” after key update.
