Celtic must build the new-look team around Turnbull & two other Bhoys - pundit
David Turnbull is one of three players Celtic need to build a team around this summer, according to Alan Hutton.
The former Rangers and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 21-year-old playmaker, midfield partner Callum McGregor and centre-back Stephen Welsh should make up the core of the Hoops’ starting XI next season.
All three started Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over Aberdeen at Parkhead as Turnbull netted the only goal of the game with a long-range effort following a pass from McGregor.
While the 27-year-old has been a mainstay at Celtic for a number of years, 21-year-old Welsh has played just 11 games for the first-team and only became a regular starter this month.
Hutton believes the centre-back has grasped his chance with both hands and suggested he should join McGregor and Turnbull as key members of the side next season.
Speaking about Welsh’s rise through the Parkhead ranks, Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “There was an opportunity for him to come in and play games and really step up to the plate and I think that’s what he’s done.

“He looked confident and what he’s done for me is that he’s defended well. That’s what Celtic were missing, don’t take any risks, just defend.
“Going forward, I’m sure whoever’s going to be the manager, whether it be Neil Lennon or whoever, are going to be looking at the likes of Welsh, Turnbull, McGregor, these are the ones that stick out in my mind anyway that you would want to build your team round.
“Really, you have to weed out the ones that don’t want to be there.”
