Celtic may make a January swoop for Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell this month, according to a report.
The Sunderland Echo are claiming that the Hoops may well make another move for a former Manchester City midfielder the report claims that they were interested in signing on a loan deal in the summer.
It is understood that the 26-year-old enforcer has decided to put an end to his time at Sunderland and ask for a move.
The report adds that he is earning £70,000-a-week in the English Championship.
The former England international has played only eight times for the Black Cats this season, and he hasn’t been involved in a league game since September, as he has been out injured with a hamstring injury.
Football Insider verdict
The chances of Jack Rodwell joining Celtic are remote to say the least. For a start the player is on far too much money, and would need to take a considerable pay cut to join the Hoops. Secondly, his injury problems which have kept him out of over four months seem like a high-risk gamble. His poor performances for Sunderland are worth a mention as well. The only connection that could make a move possible is Celtic’s Head of Recruitment Lee Congerton, who signed Rodwell for over £10million when he was Sporting Director at Sunderland in 2014. Otherwise, there’s no chance of Rodwell moving to Glasgow.
