Kieran Maguire delivers Celtic transfer verdict after London-based talks

Celtic have got some “big wages” off the books this summer and Ange Postecoglou will hope that will boost his transfer kitty.

That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after the 55-year-old’s arrival at Parkhead.

Postecoglou met with new chief executive Dominic McKay in London on 18th June, as per the club’s official website.

The Australian manager landed in Glasgow five days later and spoke with the media for the first time on 25th June.

In 2021-22, he will be without Shane Duffy who returned to Brighton after a disastrous loan spell and also Scott Brown who recently left for Aberdeen.

Maguire claimed that Postecoglou will hope their departures will be factored in as McKay works to iron out a transfer budget.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “The most important thing is to determine the budget for the following season.

“That’s a budget for both recruitment and retention. So clearly they have got some big wages off the bill. Scott Brown has gone and Celtic are no longer paying Shane Duffy’s wages.

“So there will have been some costs that have been released from the budget that he will hope can be reinvested. Postecoglou will be looking at what his budget is in terms of recruitment.

“Those are the key things. Will there be any pressures on him to sell players? He will have been able to talk about that with Dominic McKay.

“He won’t have had the chance until fairly recently because it’s been quite a merry dance in terms of trying to get both people into the club.
