Celtic told to sign ‘next Forrest’ after ‘brilliant’ display – Glasgow pundit

Frank McAvennie claims Celtic need more players than James Forrest as he continues to impress following his return to the side.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was “delighted” to see the attacker grab a vital goal in the League Cup.

On 20 November, Forrest, 30, scored the only goal of the game as Celtic beat St Johnstone 1-0 to secure a place in next month’s final.

The attacker missed nine league games between August and November as he struggled with an injury.

He has featured in the Hoops’ last three league games but is yet to earn himself a start.

McAvennie was thrilled to see Forrest return and insisted Celtic can still rely on their “big game player” to deliver when it counts.

“Jamesy Forrest still produces when it matters,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s a big game player and it didn’t surprise me that he was the one who scored against St Johnstone.

“We have a lot of attacking talent but in those big games when the pressure is on, you need those big game players.

“That’s the great thing about James. He misses a load of games in the season then comes back and scored a brilliant goal.

“Celtic need more players like him, we don’t have that depth anywhere other than attack.

“I’ve mentioned that so many times this season. But Forrest has never complained about his situation.

“He’s waited, got back in, then he’s scored that goal. I was delighted for him.”
