Celtic’s owners are forcing Brendan Rodgers out – ‘they’ve seen a disaster’

Celtic’s board have been told they are forcing Brendan Rodgers out of the club with their recent actions.

The Hoops hierarchy have come under increasing pressure over the last few weeks, with supporters furious about the lack of investment in the squad.

Fans reacted with anger and disgust to a statement Celtic released on Sunday (7 September), in which they tried to explain their transfer strategy.

Football Insider revealed last week that Rodgers could quit his role as manager of the Glasgow giants, as a result of a lack of support from the board.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Scot will jump at the first opportunity to leave the Scottish club.

Celtic board have no defence now

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the board has no defence for not helping Rodgers strengthen his squad.

This summer, Celtic spent just £13million on new signings, before they were promptly knocked out of the Champions League at the play-off stage.

Wyness added that the whole situation has been a disaster, and that Rodgers is now “fed up”.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I can see Brendan throwing in the towel. I think when we get to the first round of sackings in the Premier League, Brendan may be a candidate to come back in, or even at the top of the championship.

“I’d expect to see him making a move. I think he’s fed up with the way the board has been doing things. There was a statement from the board this week from Celtic, which left fans just shaking their heads, and it left me shaking my head. It just made no sense.

“Basically, they’re trying to defend themselves for not spending money, but there is no defence for not helping Brendan strengthen the squad.

“They’ve seen a disaster in the Champions League. They’ve got the money, we know that, and they have not strengthened appropriately. And it isn’t all about PSR, it’s just about the board being reluctant.”

Celtic to block star man’s exit

Meanwhile, Celtic will not allow Daizen Maeda to leave in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Maeda has admitted that he wanted a move away from Celtic in the summer, but the club blocked his potential transfer.

Following the revelation, there has been concern within the Hoops fanbase that the 27-year-old could try to force an exit when the window reopens.

However, sources say that the Japanese international is likely to be leading the line for  Rodgers‘ side due to their lack of depth in forward areas, meaning they cannot afford to let him go mid-season.
