Kevin Campbell has tipped Mikel Arteta to bin the Arsenal players who have a “losers’ mentality” next summer.
The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 38-year-old “knows” which members of his squad have not got the right mentality.
Speaking to the club’s website on Monday, Arteta admitted that his side are a “long way” off where he wants them to be but urged supporters to be patient.
A 3-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa prior to the international break had alarm bells ringing at the Emirates despite the London club ending their top-six hoodoo at Manchester United a week earlier.
Campbell suggested recruitment and mentality must improve if Arsenal want to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title.
“It all depends on the recruitment and the mindset of the team,” he told Football Insider.
“There has been some players who have come in and made a difference but there are still players within that squad who have a loser’s mentality. That is the hardest thing to change.
“In a cup competition it is easy but when it is the league, week in, week out. It is tough to have that strong mentality but it makes a hell of a difference.
“Mikel Arteta knows what is required because he has been at Manchester City. He knows what is in the dressing room and some of those players have not got it.
“It is down to Arteta to get that across but I can see certain players will not be at the club beyond the summer.”
