Nottingham Forest boss Philippe Montanier has made the bold statement that he wants to guide his side to English League Cup glory to secure Europa League football at the City Ground next season.
The man who led Real Sociedad into Champions League football in 2012 wants to replicate that feeling of European nights again with Forest.
“It’s very important because it is the only way to go into the Europa League,” Montanier said, as quoted by BBC Radio Nottingham.
Forest start their League Cup campaign away to Doncaster on Tuesday night and the Frenchman is insistent that despite this early stage of the season, he holds this game in high regard.
“I know it’s difficult because there are a lot of teams from the Premier League and Championship. It will be a very important game.”
The Reds have won the trophy on four occasions, with their last triumph coming in 1990, under the guidance of their greatest-ever manager Brian Clough.
Montanier has some way to go to reach those heights, but his first competitive game in English football didn’t disappoint, as Forest were involved in a 4-3 thriller last weekend, in which his side picked up all three points against newly-promoted Burton Albion.
