Charlie Nicholas: Arsenal 28-year-old is trying to make a point and looks disinterested

By Dominic Toner

Charlie Nicholas believes that Arsenal ace Alexis Sanchez is purposely making a point when he is played as a left winger.

The 28-year-old has played in a variety of positions throughout this season so far and has found his best form when playing as the frontline striker.

He has been the standout player for the Gunners this campaign, scoring 24 goals and supplying 18 assists in 45 appearances.

Sanchez’s stunning form has seen him linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium, with French giants Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested.

The Chile international is yet to agree a new deal with Arsenal and has grown frustrated with his side’s form.

Sky Sports pundit Nicholas selected Sanchez as his central striker in a combined XI with Manchester United ahead of their league clash, but insists that he makes it blatantly obvious he does not enjoy playing in a wide role.

“I’ve got Alexis Sanchez as my centre-forward, which is undoubtedly his best position,” Nicholas told Sky Sports. “He looks like he’s trying to make a point when he’s out on the left.

“He’s barely involved in play, especially when you compare to the way he plays for Chile, and just doesn’t look interested.”

Arsenal are currently sixth-placed in the league table and face a tough battle to sneak into the Champions League positions.

The north London club have never missed out on a top-four spot under Arsene Wenger, but that is appearing more and more likely each week.

Sanchez has continued to be one of the side’s biggest threats and he has helped them reach the FA Cup final, where they will face rivals Chelsea at Wembley.

In other Arsenal news, Paul Merson has questioned why they are not going for Tottenham players.
