Charlie Nicholas claims Danny Welbeck’s return from injury has given Arsenal added squad depth and they now have one of the best group of players in the Premier League.
The former Arsenal star claims the Gunners are on par with Manchester United as the squad with the best depth in the league despite neither being considered favourites to win the title.
Welbeck was out of action for eight months with a serious knee injury but he has bounced back this year and has come on as a substitute for Arsenal in their last two games.
Nicholas believes he brings more attacking threat to Arsenal’s squad and despite not being a regular goal-scorer he will prove to be very important when Arsene Wenger rotates his team.
“He [Welbeck] won’t score a big amount of goals but he will make a contribution and gives the strength in depth which is so important when you get to the business end of the season,” Nicholas told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Evening Standard.
“Arsenal and Manchester United have the strongest squads in the top six and that will come into play with the FA Cup and the Champions League.”
As well as Welbeck, Arsenal have a number of attacking stars including Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez, Lucas Perez and Alex Iwobi.
Manchester United have also got depth in attack as they can call upon Marcus Rashford, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney to play in the centre-forward role.
Both teams have struggled to retain a place in the top four this season but Arsenal are currently just one point off Tottenham in second place.
United remain in sixth place but they secured a crucial 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday to stay in touch with league leaders Chelsea who are 12 points ahead.
In other Arsenal news, Giroud has urged Wenger to extend his stay.
