Tomas Kalas is set to end his nine-year spell at Chelsea after they agreed a fee for him with Bristol City, Football Insider understands.
Football Insider broke the news this afternoon that the Championship club were set to trump Celtic in the race for the 26-year-old centre-back’s signature after a breakthrough in negotiations today.
A City source has told Football Insider that Lee Johnson’s side will pay the Premier League giants between £2.5million and £3million for Kalas.
The deal will see the Czech Republic international convert his successful loan last season into a permanent transfer, bringing to an end an association with Chelsea that began when he joined in 2010 aged 17.
Kalas has two more years remaining on his Chelsea contract but he has failed to make the first-team breakthrough at the club, making just four senior appearances.
He has accumulated extensive Championship and Dutch Eredivisie experience out on loan, including successful spells at Fulham, Middlesbrough and Vitesse Arnhem.
Kalas was one of City’s outstanding players last season, starting 38 league matches among 41 appearances in all competitions.
It will be regarded as a real coup for Johnson’s side that they are on the verge of signing him permanently for what would be a club-record fee.
In other Bristol City news, it can be REVEALED that the club are in advanced talks to sign a 25-year-old for a multi-million pound fee.
