Kieran Maguire lambasts 'shameful' Chelsea development after news from Whitehall

It is a “great shame” that the government have so far failed to redistribute the funds from the Chelsea takeover to the victims of the war in Ukraine.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the £2.5billion which appears to still be frozen in Roman Abramovich’s company accounts.

The oligarch was forced to sell Chelsea after he was sanctioned for to his links to Russian president Vladimir Putin, with a group led by American billionaire Todd Boehly eventually completing a buyout in May.

The sale was allowed to go through on the proviso that the funds be redirected to humanitarian causes in Ukraine.

But as revealed by Football Insider on Thursday (3 November), the latest from Whitehall is that there has been no progress in this department.

Maguire slammed the government for their handling of the situation.

Chelsea as a football club have done nothing wrong with regard to the proceeds,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

Therefore, no blame should be given in their direction. But what is very frustrating is the lack of progress made by the government and government agencies with regard to the distribution of monies to Ukraine.

Humanitarian and other aid is desperately needed there today.

The fact that this has dragged on for months is more to do with the fact that lawyers, civil servants and administrators are unable to come to some quick agreement to provide relief. That is a great shame.
