Chelsea are losing more money than Everton as FFP bombshell revealed

Chelsea have recorded the worst financial losses in the Premier League for the second successive year, Football Insider analysis shows.

Aggregated losses across the top flight for the 2021-22 financial year are set to exceed £650million, down on the £1billion clubs lost in the midst of the pandemic in 2020-21.

Chelsea’s 2021-22 shortfall totalled £121m, a marginal improvement on the £145.6m they lost the previous season but a figure which leaves them in a precarious position in terms of financial fair play.

Six clubs – Everton, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Southampton, Fulham and Nottingham Forest – are yet to release their accounts ahead of Friday’s (31 March) deadline, but it is understood that all will post losses.

Man United (£115m) and Leicester City (£92m) ran Chelsea close in terms of the heaviest deficits in the Premier League, while Man City’s £41.7m profit is the division’s highest.

Chelsea are unlikely to return to profitability next season after their extraordinary £600m outlay on new signings in the first season of Todd Boehly’s premiership.

As has been reported elsewhere, the Blues will apply for an exemption from the top flight’s financial rules because of the three months of revenue they lost while former owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned in March last year.

Meanwhile, the Premier League have referred Everton – who will post losses of £50-70m for 2021-22 – to an independent commission for an alleged breach, which could lead to a fine, points deduction, transfer embargo or spending cap.

Like the Toffees, Chelsea’s losses over the current financial fair play assessment window exceed £300m, almost three times what they are allowed to lose under financial fair play.

But Covid allowances and other adjustments for infrastructure, academy and community expenditure mean they are unlikely to fall foul of the regulations this time around.
