Chelsea: Reece James contract structure perfect for owners after record £355m losses
Chelsea’s ownership will be delighted at Reece James accepting a performance-related new contract at the club.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that James has “set an example” for players to follow.
James’ new deal will keep the 26-year-old at Stamford Bridge until 2032, having began his journey with the club aged six.
It comes after Chelsea reported a pre-tax loss of £355million during the 2024-25 season, the highest annual loss ever made by an English football club.
Player departures at Chelsea in the summer transfer window are therefore likely to try and improve their financial situation, but James looks to be one star who will not be sold.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes all players will have to look at agreeing performance-related contracts in the future.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness backs James to fulfil his potential after signing his new contract.
| Turnover | £511m |
| Annual pre-tax loss | £355m |
| Wage Bill | £388m |
| Squad Valuation | £1.52bn |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “He’s got a lot of years left in him and I like him. I think Reece has got every chance of fulfilling that potential.
“Why not go, you know, I’m sure the basic isn’t exactly £30 pounds a week. So let’s be sure that Reece is going to go on, and I think he’s done the right thing and possibly set an example in terms of the structure for Chelsea that the ownership will be very happy about.
| Category | Figure | Context |
| Annual Pre-Tax Loss | £355m | Highest ever in English football history. |
| Annual Wage Bill | £388m | Requires immediate structural reform. |
| Reece James Expiry | 2032 | 8-year commitment to the club captain. |
| New Strategy | Performance-Related | A shift away from high “guaranteed” basics. |
“And I think that’s something that again, nearly all the top level players are going to have to be looking at rather than guaranteed huge basics, they’re going to have to look at a bigger element of performance-related pay.”
Chelsea star facing summer axe
Sources have told Football Insider that Chelsea could sell either Robert Sanchez or Filip Jorgensen this summer with Mike Penders returning from his loan spell at Strasbourg.
Penders could be given an opportunity to stake his claim to become the club’s number one goalkeeper, which means a likely exit for either Sanchez or Jorgensen.
Chelsea’s goalkeeping position has been scrutinised over recent seasons, with many believing it is an area the Blues could strengthen.
